In Elliott Wave Theory, there are important principles regarding the structure of each wave. One of the obvious limitations is that Wave 2 cannot be in a Triangle pattern. So why is that? Let's find out!
1. The Nature of Wave 2 in Elliott Wave
Wave 2 is a Corrective Wave that occurs after Wave 1.
The main goal of Wave 2 is to correct the price before the main trend moves forward.
It is usually a Zigzag (Simple Correction) or Double/Triple Zigzag pattern.
Characteristics of Wave 2:
It is usually a sharp and fast correction.
It has a "Deep Retracement" characteristic (usually retraces 50-78.6% of Wave 1).
It is more often a Zigzag than a Flat or something else.
2. The Nature of Triangle
A Triangle is a distinctly different pattern from a Zigzag or Flat.
It usually occurs during the "consolidation" period before the final wave of a trend.
It represents the accumulated power in the market. (Consolidation) before the next driving wave
Consists of 5 Sub-Waves: A-B-C-D-E
Triangle Properties
Triangle is an “accumulating” pattern
Not much retracement of the previous wave
Triangle cannot occur at the beginning of a trend according to Elliott Wave
Conclusion: Triangle is not a wave 2 because…
Wave 2 is a deep and sharp correction, while Triangle does not much retracement of the previous wave
Triangle is a consolidation pattern → Found in waves 4 or B
Triangle represents the accumulation of energy → Wave 2 is not an accumulation of energy, but a correction before the trend continues
Triangle cannot occur at the beginning of a trend according to Elliott Wave
Advice for Elliott Wave Analysts
If wave 2 looks like a triangle, you may have miscalculated it because it is part of a complex correction (WXY/WXYXZ) or it is actually wave B of the correction
Look for a Zigzag or Flat for wave 2
Use Fibonacci Retracement (50%-78.6%) to help confirm the analysis
